Zero no Tsukaima: Princess no Rondo – Episode 1
After the failure that was the Futatsuki no Kishi, the third season of Zero no Tsukaima played it safe, and to my surprise, turn out to be quite an enjoyable first episode. You can tell they wanted to keep all the fans happy by adding a bit of everything from comedy, serious drama, plot development, bed scenes and of course Louise’s tsundere violence.
Summary
The episode wastes no time and gets right underway with an intimate sex scene between Louise and Saito.
Or at least it would have been if Siesta hadn’t interrupted at the worst possible time. Damn you Siesta, you have just made yourself the target of my ridicule for my blog.
Now that the fan service has being ticked off, we can get back to the plot. Saito’s rune on his hand; the symbolism for his life of eternal servitude disappears. You’d think he’d act a little happier about this.
The case of the missing rune
This creates tension between Louise and Saito. Louise has doubts that Saito may not be so willing to stay with her, now that he has no contract binding them together. Considering her sadistic treatment of him so far, it’s not all that surprising. But, then again, we all know how much of a masochist Saito is, so he’s not going anywhere.
After running into a forest alone, Louise gets attacked by a familiar of an unknown void magic user. She declares herself as Sheffield. Since they can’t reveal too much in the first episode, this encounter achieved absolutely nothing except for introducing a new character. She looks somewhat like a female version of the Joker, maybe the producers are paying tribute to Heath Ledger.
Joker cosplayer!
As expected Saito jumps in at the last second and saves the day. Apparently, losing all of his abilities as a familiar didn’t reduce his ability to blurt out cheesy lines.
Amazingly, Princess Henrietta gets more screentime than both Tabitha and Kirche. She wanted to steal Saito from Louise by making him sign a contract making him her knight.
Calmly conjuring her evil plans to steal Saito
Thoughts
This episode, while it could have being better, got the job done. It reminded us of all the characters, got the plot underway and continued Louise and Saito’s relationship . Finally, it seems, the relationship between them is going to get somewhere. After the second season completely derailed everything they established in the first, it looks like it’s back on track.
On a side note, the fan service wasn’t as good bad in this episode. I only found three pantsu shots in the entire episode and one of them was in the OP. This isn’t really a bad thing especially in light of some other anime that take fan service way too far.
Pantsu…
Pantsu…
Pantsu!

I was thinking about this all of yesterday while groggy on painkillers (perhaps why it took be a whole day to reach a conclusion), but it could be simply protocol, as all knights are in the service of the Royal House. Althought that steamy room scene last season begs to differ, eh?

The title of the post makes it kind of obvious. The anime itself really isn’t that funny.
