Kannagi – new standards in product placement

Indiscriminate merchandise promotion

I thought I’ve seen the worst with Pizza Hut and Geass. I guess I was wrong.

When you have no sponsors to product place for, why not promote up coming figure releases for your own anime. Perhaps the producers read Danny’s Blog Monetization post, and decided to become a Amazon associate. I guess it’s slightly better than the latest collaboration between the Censorbat and the Pedobear.

Since I’m talking about Pizza Hut and Kannagi. They’ve been running a promotion on their site giving away free ringtones, postcards, posters, signed scripts, phone wallpapers etc etc. Clearly the C.C. + Cheese-kun combo worked well for them.

  1. This seems to me the most discriminating of product placement. Promoting yourself seems much less problematic than promoting Pizza Hut. And Kannagi’s pizza scene showed only part of the PH logo. It was much more discreet than Code Geass has been.

  2. The indiscriminate I was referring to was the fact that nothing seems to be off limits, not even self promotion. Also, I’m sure Pizza Hut will start becoming the staple diet for Nagi, considering the cosy relationship this series seems to have with them.

  3. I don’t think it really detracts from the story since I didn’t really find it “slapping in my face.” An advertiser is finding it hard to reach out to the masses, so I give them credit at least to make such subtle sublime advertising.

  4. I thought the self promotion was poking fun at itself. There’s no main attention placed on it, so you shouldn’t really worry about it so much. :P
