Wow, has it really been over 2 months since my last post? Looks like I failed to finish blogging a series yet again. T_T *goes to find excuse for the MIA*

Oh yes it had something to do with the worst course ever conceived, leaving me completely demoralised and mentally scarred. Not to mention the countless hours of sleep lost. But, I plan to try and forget about that as I check out the new Autumn season.

Starting with CANAAN, I noticed this particular scene. It seems the studio went out of their way to realistically portray the setting by hiring a Shanghainese voice actor to deliver 2 lines in the local dialect. Unfortunately, they just happened to hire the world’s worst voice actor. I was rewinding a lot to try to make out exactly what he said, plus, it was so out of place it was hilarious. It probably had the reverse effect to their intentions. Then again, it’s not like many people would be able to understand him anyway.

As far as the actual episode is concerned, I thought it was quite decent, although I’ve learnt never to judge a series by the first episode. *cough* Gai-re Zero *cough*Apparently, it’s based on the Type-Moon game, 428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de. I’ve never played it, and I don’t plan to play it, so this show will be completely new to me.

Anyway, the good points of the episode: It had a lot of cute girls.

And and enough mystery to keep my attention for a second episode. So a standard first ep by any standard, full of eye candy, I’m just hoping that it has some substance to back it up.

The only reason anyone should be there is if they’re Taoist or a tourist. I was neither. Any local will tell you it’s full of overpriced merchandise and food stuff, designed to rip off ignorant foreigners. For some reason, it build up a reputation for have great food, but that’s a lie, it’s crap and it’s expensive. Okay enough temple bashing, you should really check it out if you ever go to Shanghai.

Oh and this series is produced by the studio, P.A. Works. Don’t recognise them? That’s probably because the first and only anime they fully produced was “True Tears” back in 2008. Considering I watched that and can’t really remember much of it anymore, I have a sinking feeling about how this series will turn out.

So the conspiracy deepens, at a slow and arduous pace. Not giving away anything substantial, yet providing just enough so it doesn’t feel like a waste of an episode. I guess that means that this is a well written series, which btw is a rarity these days. However, like all animes with a promising premisies, there’s a 67.56% chance it will be ruined by a less than average ending. (Yes I just made that statistic up)

Out of all the passports he had back in DC, he picked the one with the name he was using previously.

What kind of shopping complex has a mosh pit that doubles as a holding cell for 20,000 NEETs? Better question, how does 20,000 NEETs fail to overpower Akira.  Maybe it was the diet of cup noodles… negative nutrient values.

Continuing with the movie references, in this episode we have Dawn of the Dead and some French movie called “The Cold Blue”, which is probably the Movie Le Grand Bleu. However, the English translation of the title was The Big Blue, so it’s either an oversight by the writers or very Japan specific. Either ways, the movie choices the writer of this show picks remains just as bizarre.

(Although, I don’t know why he would write down his own phone number) It just shows that someone has actually sat down and gone through the story board, rather than thinking up these plot devices the night before.

I must say, re-routing his message to his wife in the hope that she will turn homicidal is one of the most hopefully assassinations I’ve ever heard of. Unless Juiz knew she had a predisposition for murder, there were numerous alternate reactions she could’ve had. Of course, none of this would’ve happened if he invested his money properly; purchase stocks, buy real estate like Akira, put it in a bank? I wonder if you can get interest on it.

Closer examination of the craters reveal a Fibonacci spiral.

Episode two, and it hasn’t gone completely off the track, which is better than what I can said for most of the series in this season. It’s also playing out to be one of the most oversubbed shows in history. A quick glance over at fansubwiki reveals some 11 groups doing it. I expect over half of them will perform the mysterious disappearing act by next episode. The show is also just as prevalent in the blogsphere, with a quick glance over at Anime Nano yielding some 80+ entries, and this is only the second episode. I guess this is more a testament of how devoid of creativity the entire anime industry is when we are all willing to sell out to a change in scenery and full frontal nudity. But alas, here I am, selling out to the same rating-grabbing plot devices, and joining the myriad of blogs out there hoping that this won’t turn into a complete waste of time.

The one glaring issue I have coming out of this episode is why they would hire proper English voice actor and make the lead character run around Washington if they were going to set the rest of the series in Japan. (Which by the looks of things, is exactly where the rest of the series will take place) Considering how they’re still running the how US and Hollywood references; I’m hoping that it will still unfold as part of the plot, and not just a gimmicky first episode to secure some air time. Maybe there isn’t a decent supply of home-grown terrorists in Japan, so the producers decided to import one from the US.

Saki is a little too ditsy to be a heroine for me. Not for a show involving terrorists, government conspiracies and random missile attacks. But alas, she’s not the most clueless girl this season, that title will have to go to Yui.

Selecao, the only Selecao I’ve ever heard of is the Brazilian national football team. Therefore, I’m going to assume I’m completely off on this reference. Can someone offer more insight?

I wonder what happens if he runs out

Watch this detective has given me a new business strategy. This is how it works. You borrow a large sum of money for yakuza loan sharks and then pay Juiz to kill them once you the get money. Just make sure you turn a profit in the process. This way you get rid of some violent individuals, while lining your own pocket phone. It’s a win win.

This series, while it’s maintaining my interest is really un-screencap friendly. There’s just not enough random scene worthy of a comment. Either that or my skills are lacking. It will be interesting to see where this shows goes from here. It can either take the romantic drama/comedy route, or the government conspiracy route. Seeing as how it’s only 11 episodes, it’s doubtful it can take both and maintain a decent story pace.

Why are you in the line of fire?

As far as first episodes go, this is right up there with Ga-rei Zero. But, we all know where that ended up, so let’s just pray that this doesn’t descend down the same tracks to an abrupt and spectacular derailment. This also happens to be my first post after a long hiatus. There isn’t really a story behind it, other than the fact that last season was seriously demoralising. But, I’m back, and hopefully with enough persistence to actually finish a series for once.

Anyway, back to the anime. It’s set in Washington DC! Isn’t that awesome, we finally have an anime with a setting outside of Japan and it’s not Gundam! Although, I’m not sure whether it’s a good thing as far as the studio is concerned, who are undoubtedly marketing this to a Japanese audience. But, who cares, I’m enjoying it!

What else is in this anime? How about full frontal nudity!? Albeit the wrong kind, but it’s awesome and hilarious… in a wrong kind of way…

There’s also a cute and airy girl. So… Jason Bourne meets one of the numerous romantic comedies meets lost in translation? And just because they made a reference to it, I’m going to add Taxi in there as well.

Although, after all the awesomeness I just listed, nothing much happened in the first episode. It’s just your standard character and setting introducing first ep, and all we have is a bizarre premise involving a Bourne-esque guy, and a North Korean missile strike. So saying that this show is truly awesome is kind of premature.

No… what happened to Doraemon?

On a side note, did anyone else notice that this show seems to contain a lot of political innuendo? For example, the conversation between Morimi Saki and Takizawa Akira, “It occurred to me that everything, from my puny little worries to world affairs are actually connected to that place [The White House], at the root.” In the current economic and political climate, those are some pretty significant words. Also the missile strike on Japan… I don’t know, it could just be just the producers’ attempt at making the anime more current and believable. We’ll just have to see where this all goes.

First of all, Happy Chinese New Year. Was your New Year’s eve eventful? Living in Sydney has resulted in a distinct lack of interest for Chinese New Year in my family.

A typical New Year’s eve in my family involves dinner with the whole family, followed by my parents pestering me to stream the Spring Festival Evening Gala for them. Which I will grudgingly do, only for them to watch a couple of skits before claiming that it’s boring and heading off to bed. I would then watch the entire thing simply because I have nothing better to do.

This year they supposedly removed all lip syncing. Even though I’m hesitant to believe in Chinese announcements, I’m inclined to believe this one, considering how horrible some of the singers sounded. Seriously, Jackie Chan can’t sing!

I didn’t really like this year’s Gala. Most of the skits were just lame. Either that or they were just so packed full of culturally specific jokes that I didn’t get them.

Has anyone seen Examurai? It sort of came out of the blue. I think it got announced like a week before it first aired. I remember when I first heard about this show, I couldn’t even find a raw to watch. Probably because no-one knew about it. I really should stop checking out new animes and actually watch the second episode of Viper’s Creed. ==;

Look at that animation quality!

Examuri features the seven members of the EXILE song and dance performance unit as the main characters. The anime is produced by EXILE leader Hiroyuki “Hiro” Igarashi, and manga creator Hiroshi Takahashi contributed the original designs. Unfortunately, there lies the problem, the whole thing plays like one big PR gimmick.

The episodes even has clips of the group performing… rehearsing… having dinner. Just giving you some background information about the anime necessary for watching it.

Always ground your boats

The story is about the seven samurai in Japan’s Warring States Period. The story takes place in the fictional city of Yasaka. After watching the first two episodes, I can’t really add to that. So far all they’ve done was introduce three of the main characters, and a few fights here and there. There’s next to no semblance of a plot as of yet.

With that said, the fight scenes range from average to decent. Well, the ones they bothered to anime that is.

I really can’t make any more comments about this show because it really hasn’t given me anything to comment about. So far it just seems rather amateurish attempt to gain more publicity. Then again, maybe it’s because each episode is only 12mins long, and I’ve only really seen one full length episode in the normal sense.

I really shouldn’t have committed to blogging Viper’s Creed so soon. I’ve just recently checked out Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo, and it is clearly the superior mecha anime this season. So much so that it’s not even a mecha anime. It has transcended the limiting boundary known as the mecha genre and transformed into some kind of mecha/magical girl/parody hybrid. What does that all mean? This anime makes you go, “wtf am I watching?” Yet, at the same time, you cant stop watching it.

I’m sure by now you’ve already seen the first three episodes. So I’m not going to bore you with any synopsis. Yeah yeah blame me for being slow. I’m just going to jump straight to why I think this show is so awesome.

The art. It’s amazing. If there’s one thing Sunrise does well each and everytime, it’s the animation quality. What’s more amazing it that this is in no way a serious show. It’s layed back and ridiculous, yet it sports some of the most amazing animation.

The references. This is full of them and they’re fricken hilarious. It makes everything seem familiar yet alien at the same time.

No this is not a guide on how to turn change into “tip”. It’s merely one of my stranger experiences purchasing an Easy Way, which is the biggest (and probably only) milk tea fanchise in Sydney if not Australia. More after the jump.

There I was getting a large honeydew milk tea, which cost $4.70. I gave the girl behind the counter a $5 note, a 50 cent and a 20 cent coin, expecting any normal person to realise I wanted to get rid of some coins, and prompt giving me a dollar coin in change. But apparently dealing with change was never a part of the Easy Way training course, which probably only involves a run down of the drinks’ names. The girl smiled and kindly handed me what you see in that photo.

What’s more bizarre was the fact that she actually deposited my money into the cash register before digging out new coins to hand back to me.

After much deliberation, I’ve decided to blog Viper’s Creed. Everyone seems to be talking about Rideback, so I thought I’d blog about the lesser known mecha anime this season. Also if it makes any difference, it’s not by GONZO, so there’s still a chance it won’t crash and burn like many of GONZO’s animes.

Synopsis

Sigh… I really don’t feel like writing one, so I’ll just summarise the opening narration and the ending monologue.

In the middle of the 21st centaury,global environmental pollution worsened, an economic crisis occurred, and war erupted due to geographic and communications segregation within nations. After that, preeminent persons from each country were gathered in this area. Due to it’s geographical significance, it was named “Fort Diversity”. One of the civilian military companies responsible for maintaining order within Fort Diversity is “Arqon Global Securities”. This is where the heroes with the highest results, “Unit Viper” members, engage in a life and death battle with unmanned weapons; remnants of the war era.

Because of the raised sea level, 35% of the world’s land area was engulfed by the sea. Most of the major cities have been isolated. Eight years since the end of the war, the remaining unmanned weapons, “Bagnet” continue to invade people’s lives from the shadows.

Thoughts/Impressions/Analysis/Whatever I used to call this part

This thing seriously reminds me of those automatons in Gundam 00

The premise of this show, like all scifi animes, is barely plausible. Global warming didn’t get fixed. The economic crisis erupted most likely due to the resulting food shortage and immobilization of infrastructure. (or it could just be America screwing up again) The combination of the two sparked a third world war as people fought over the right to eat. Oh and to keep their feet dry. Anyway, the end result of all that is, we have a city full of geniuses protected by a mercenary police force. Makes perfect sense to me.

Console girls are yummy

Disregarding all of that, because anime was never meant to be analysed, let’s have a look at the cute console girls. They’re called “Operators” and they’re job is to feed vital combat analysis data to the Unit Viper engaged in combat. One would assume this is to prevent the Viper pilots from getting distracted by flashing sign telling them their ass is on fire. It’s obviously a lot less distracting for a cute female voice to describe it all in explicit detail.

“Oi, I haven’t given you permission to pee yet!”

Did I mention the pilots have to ask permission from these console girls in order to transform. I’m sure that is a perfectly viable combat procedure.

And here are the mechas, which I must say do look pretty cool. The CGI was done very well and the 2D/3D blend together well too. Then again, this is only the first episode, so we’ll have to see how the art holds up as the series progress. The art was also one of the main reasons I pick this over Rideback. Not because it was bad, but I simply didn’t like Rideback’s style. Plus, this clearly has the better Engrish theme. XD

Merry Christmas everyone!

There, obligation over. If you didn’t read it, it’s not my fault.

One of the good things about living in Australia, and there aren’t many, is that being +10 or +11 during Daylight Savings, you get to see the new day before most people in the world. The benefits of that is, you get to be one of the first to post out the long string of obligatory Christmas greetings that will start to crop up all over the blogsphere. Of course, there are those who chooses to send their greets out even earlier, to beat the mad rush, but unless you live in New Zealand… *snicker* YOU’RE A DAY EARLY!

I recently checked out the anime, Kurozuka, and I know this is a pretty big claim, but it’s got to have the worst OP of 2008. “Systematic People” by Wagdug Futuristic Unity. It’s one of the few occasions where I actually thought, “holy crap, that’s a bad song”.

I think it was the first time an anime OP contributed to putting me off the series. Though, I’ll probably finish it anyway. The combination of punk and Engrish was… eye opening… in a bad way. A very bad way.

There were a few other shockers this year, but this was the only one that stood out for me.

The Clannad production team seems to have decide to make a contribution to society with a sequence of imagery depicting the consequences of drugs. However, it seems to be a rather confusing message involving gender bending.

That’s right! Do drugs and you’ll turn into a girl! XD

An adequate message to all those young, impressionable minds that as we speak are clutching their groins in fear that it might take a stroll. As for the more “mature” audience, their still wondering what Yoshino was doing taking estrogen.

I’m not sure what the thought process of the screenwriters were when they adapted this series, but I’m sure at some point someone stepped back and said, “eh… guys, I don’t think we have enough material for twelve episode.”

“Oh don’t worry, we’ll just air the third last episode first so no-one will remember it when the story gets there, and we can air it again under the pretext that we’re helping our memory deficient viewers.”

I was never a fan of the whole “air the last episode first” style. I think it’s just the lazy alternative so suspense writers don’t have to write proper scripts. It’s a style that has a pre-built suspense/mystery element all the way through until the story catches up to the first episode. Of course, by then, nobody remembers what happens in the first episode and they’re forced to either do a recap, or make them watch the first episode again.

This is compounded by the fact that such a style in Ga-rei Zero was completely pointless. It wasn’t a suspense or mystery show. There was absolutely no need to air the climax first. All it did was spoil the story, which would have played out fine in normal chronological order. That and the production studio must have saved BILLIONS recycling footage/frames.

There is still the question of why they focused so much on the political and defense force side of things if they were hardly going to touch on it in the rest of the series.

There you have it. How to fit 11 episodes of material into 12 episodes. Make that 10 episodes of material, seeing as no-one knows how the very first episode fits in all of this.

Some old news, that is new news to me because I don’t check my email enough. Canadian chemist graduate, Le Trung, dissatisfied with what mother nature and society has produced, has fashioned robotic waifu for himself. Aiko as she is affectionately called, was named after the Japanese characters for love and child. (love child… lol?) Le Trung estimates Aiko can be mass-produced for $15,000 to $17,000 USD. It brings new meaning to mail-order brides…

This isn’t exactly new news, as the project has being developed for over a year now. Her latest upgrades have enabled her to identify objects placed before her, sense and signal pain or annoyance. If you squeeze her cheeks or other parts of her anatomy she will tell you, “That hurts or stop touching me.” Just what us guys need, pay $17,000 for waifu that complains.  =P She also recognises faces and speaks 13,000 sentences, and Le said: “Her software could be redesigned to simulate her having an orgasm.” Look forward to it as part of Arte Tokio’s next line of releases.

I have to say, it’s surprising to hear this coming out of Canada. When I heard the words “robot” and “wife” in the one sentence, my mind immediately  jumps to Japan, but I guess it’s a good thing, not all perverted lulz originate from Japan. Le Trung doesn’t sound like a Japanese name, and hopefully he isn’t because that would just be the ultimate irony.

An Australian man has lost his appeal against child pornography charges for possessing images of the Simpsons characters having sex. Supreme Court judge, Justice Michael Adams has ruled that the cartoon depicting sex between characters from The Simpsons is child pornography. This is yet another example of how the political and judical system here makes no sense. Read the rest of the story here.

My thoughts after the jump.

I had always thought that loli in the fictional form was illegal here because the Australian government were a bunch of conservative pricks banning everything that’s remotely offensive. Save the children! Virtual children are children too! But alas, they have proved themselves to not only be pricks but ignorant pricks.

Let’s look at the reason behind this ludicrous ruling, because fictional loli materials “fuel demand for material that does involve the abuse of children.” It’s just a glorified version of the age old question, “Do watching/looking at loli will lead someone to look at child pornography or commit child abuse?” The answer? No. Pedophiles don’t become pedophiles because they’ve looked at too much loli, they’re pedophiles because there’s something mentally wrong with them. In order to fuel demand for child pornography, loli will have to first turn odinary people into pedophiles that want to look at child porn. To argue that loli material “fuels demand for material that does involve the abuse of children” is like arguing that playing violent games will make people want to go and watch murder in real life.

So if loli doesn’t fuel demand by turning people into pedophiles, how does it fuel demand? Well, one can argue that it fuels an established pedophile’s urge to go and find for child porn… ==; Yeah I know, that was lame… I wonder how much Simpsons porn they found on the hard drive of paedophiles in the last police raid. Even if that’s somehow a valid arguement, wouldn’t it be a better use of the taxpayer’s money to actually catch those paedophiles instead of going around prosecuting ordinary citizens.

Loli art (as much as sexual drawings of the Simpsons can be considered art) and Australia never really mixed well. After all, the guys at the top are a bunch of reactionary ignoranmuses who brings us this and this.

Okay, it’s not really an air date, rather an air month, but who the hell cares. All that matters is Fullmetal Alchemist 2 will launch in Japan in April. The show’s official website says so with a 10 second trailer. We all know nothing says “we’re serious” more than a 10 second trailer.

Considering Al’s metallic appearance, it looks to be an alternate continuation from the first season’s ending. However, I propose other reasons for the reappearance of the armour. Remnant of that Shambala incident. Al’s cosplay to attend Comiket. Recycling of old footage as part of Bones’s new information management.

Two days before the offical release of Gundam vs Gundam for PSP, there’s already an iso floating around out there for the world to appreciate. Oh what would the world be without pirates.

Indiscriminate merchandise promotion

I thought I’ve seen the worst with Pizza Hut and Geass. I guess I was wrong.

When you have no sponsors to product place for, why not promote up coming figure releases for your own anime. Perhaps the producers read Danny’s Blog Monetization post, and decided to become a Amazon associate. I guess it’s slightly better than the latest collaboration between the Censorbat and the Pedobear.

Since I’m talking about Pizza Hut and Kannagi. They’ve been running a promotion on their site giving away free ringtones, postcards, posters, signed scripts, phone wallpapers etc etc. Clearly the C.C. + Cheese-kun combo worked well for them.
