Japan, in the midst of an unprecedented recession, has asked its corporations to work toward fixing another major problem: the country’s low birthrate. Facing a dwindling birthrate of 1.34, well below the 2.0 needed to maintain the population, Japanese corporations have be asked to let workers go home early to spend time with their families and help Japan with its pressing social problem.

First of all, Happy Chinese New Year. Was your New Year’s eve eventful? Living in Sydney has resulted in a distinct lack of interest for Chinese New Year in my family.
An Australian man has lost his appeal against child pornography charges for possessing images of the Simpsons characters having sex. Supreme Court judge, Justice Michael Adams has ruled that the cartoon depicting sex between characters from The Simpsons is child pornography. This is yet another example of how the political and judical system here makes no sense. Read the rest of the story here.

A team of researchers, led by Takahisa Furukawa, M.D. & Ph.D., at Osaka Bioscience Institute in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, has identified a protein that is necessary to efficiently transmit visual information to the brain. The researchers believe the Pikachurin protein plays a role in determining the efficiency of kinetic vision, and thus name it after Pikachu who is known for its lightning-fast moves. Also it’s a stunt to get free publicity for their research and the institute, but they forgot to mention that.
This is so awesome… I never thought I’d see the day Pikachu would do something awesome enough for me to blog about.
